Bits and pieces in the world at large.

CutBank Literary Magazine

During the 2022-23 academic year, I served as Editor-in-Chief of CutBank, the University of Montana’s graduate literary magazine.

In addition to producing two print issues of CutBank, I published three single-author chapbooks, facilitated CutBank’s annual literary contests, and guided a team of twelve editors in continuing the magazine’s fifty-year literary legacy.

One of my favorite moments as editor, though, was in sitting down to chat with poet Pádraig Ó Tuama for a full-length interview, which appeared in CutBank 98.

Deep Wild Journal

I wrote an essay called “The Good Hunt” that was published in the 2021 edition of Deep Wild Journal, a non-profit publication whose mission is to curate the best writing about roadless and wild places. It’s one of the rare, print-only publications and it fits beautifully into a backpack.

“The Good Hunt” was nominated for a 2021 Pushcart Prize and received a 2021 Best American Essays nomination and notable distinction.

The Freeflow Podcast

I wrote an essay about my experience on a 2019 Freeflow Institute writers’ retreat with David James Duncan. In 2021, Freeflow’s director, Chandra Brown, invited me to record the piece for the Freeflow Podcast.

Venery & Veritas Podcast

A chance phone call to Missoula Wine Merchants ended in me recording a podcast episode with Everett Headley of Venery & Veritas about the intersection of wine, wild game, hunting, and the pleasure of being outside in Montana.

Aberdeen Magazine

I got to play ghostwriter for Bob McCue’s story about his grandfather, George McCue, who was the county veterinarian in Aberdeen, South Dakota from 1920-1961.
